The project designers pay particular attention to the question of “architectural recovery” and preservation of the historic memory of the place. Their proposal meets the requirements for renewal of the disused surroundings of an old barracks, with a view to building a diversified and attractive district with a large cultural centres. But what is more, this project challenges preconceptions by developing according to a principle of urban stratification, below and above the natural ground level.
Placed in a 20 metre-deep crater, the square is surrounded by a luxuriant gardin, and incorporates the cultural centre. The living area is above, on superimposed slabs, which accommodate the modules of apartment houses, the gardines, terraces or pedestrian areas. The monumental nature of the work does not affect the visibility of the barracks, which will be conserved and re-used. |
