The seminar Wood and Architecture organised on October 12th last in Paris within the framework of an European program led by AHEC (American Hardwood Export Council) exhibited two recent projects using American hardwood. As the Auditorium in Rome (Renzo Piano) is the subject of a next article, we chose to present to you the new seat and workshop Vacheron Constatin in Geneva. The project got awarded during an international competition and the building is based on an architectural design combining sustainability with dynamics, to the spitting image of the Swiss watch company, founded in the XVIII century. This concept reveals itself in a double envelope of wood and metal. An exterior coating in stainless steel creates a natural, simple and luminous impression, suggests sustainability and is fixed like an interior envelope lined with wood, a warm material promoting concentration and working comfort. The decision fell on American cherry wood, a subtle, warm kind of tree very much in demand. Wood is omnipresent, as from the entrance hall, since massive slats cover the floor to the wave of the acoustic ceiling crossing the whole building. In the offices, the passage of networks required a system of removable blind floors in Canadian maple, providing in its turn the technical floors with fibre and texture.

Planted in a green environment thanks to the work of landscape architect Michel Desvignes, the building allows an abundant penetration of the sunlight reflecting on the glass and stainless steel. The atrium connecting five floors has been embellished with footbridges, crosswise installed stairs and a elevator, all completely in glass. The light filtered by the wood throughout very large and rectangular perforation creates an interesting dimming game.
The responsible of the project, Véronique Descharrières, talks about the importance of the smallest detail and the requirements regarding quality, both in the area of technical obligations as prestige of the company. The term High Environment Quality dominates absolutely and the result is precise and significant.
