School in Bad Homburg – Germany
Architects :Bumiller & Junkers (Berlin)
Three new buildings arranged freely around the existing main building are designed like village houses, and are unified by their zinc peaked roof. The solid masonry with a coloured façade plaster contrasts with the lightness of the entrance building, with its wood cladding. It is the central feature of this school, and serves as an access and transit point between the other buildings, coordinating the various spaces. The larch fins of the external skin of the building are interspersed with large glazed areas. These can be oriented to direct the flow of light from the outside, or limit the view into the building from the outside, creating a reassuring atmosphere. In the evening, the light inside through these fins offers an interesting lighting effect which enhances the whole building.
