Casino in Lugano – Switzerland
Architects : Carlo Ceccolini, Luca Gazzaniga, Bruno Huber Architects (Lugano)
To conceal the irregularity of the internal spaces and the composition of the enclosed, glazed areas, the architects proposed a second façade made of stone panels, lining the original glass and aluminium siding façade. The material chosen, Italian travertine, the same used in other parts of the building, is used in an innovative way nevertheless. Pivoting panels are used, and it appears completely different from the travertine glued to the wall in the existing parts of the building. The rotation of the finds and their sinuous design form a façade that is perpetually changing with the light and the viewing angle. By day, the stone façade asserts a powerful, urban personality; at night, the electroluminescent diodes allowing infinite combinations of colours make it intangible and lightweight. That is when the façade really comes to life, like the casino itself.
