Apartment building at the foot of the Ütliberg - Switzerland
Architects :Fuhrimann & Hächler (Zürich)
For this low-budget project, the architects used common materials – concrete, wood, galvanised steel – which blend together harmoniously. The prefabricated wooden structure was erected in three days, and surrounds a concrete load-bearing structure comprising the base, the stairs and the interior walls separating the apartments. The exterior skin of large sheets of galvanized steel emphasises the compact and slightly polygonal volume of the main part of the building. A singular characteristic of this façade is that the apertures are different depending on the orientation. The north façade, with a view over the city, has large windows with no apparent frames. Ventilation flaps made of larch are a reminder of the wooden construction of the exterior. On the south side, larch window frames are fitted with fabric blinds. The casement sashes are always combined with additional ventilation flaps made of larch.
