Zufferey House in Leytron – Switzerland
Architects: Roland Vassaux (Fully)
Ardévaz, the dominant mountain to the north of a former slate quarry, was the unique source of inspiration for the design of this house, through its shape and its materials. This spectacular, monolithic building, entirely clad in natural slates, is perceived as a block placed in a fragile balance on the ground. The inclined sides of the roof follow the shape of the east and west sides of the mountain, while the bond of the slates is reminiscent of the strata of schiste. The openings are reminiscent of the horizontal marks of the quarry paths. Their size and positions frame landscapes, from the foreground to the background: the vineyard, the slope, and the mountain.
