Copper and Architecture Competition
The winner in the European projects category, the church in Laajasalo ( Finland ) by architects Kari Jarvinen and Merja Nieminen uses copper in “strata”, like a cliff which reveals several tones changing over time. The cladding of the copper panels is made of flat and striated surfaces, creating an extreme horizontality, with a very tactile effect. Using modernity to follow on from the traditions of Finnish religious architecture, the building has a harmonious relationship with its surroundings. The interior spaces clad in wood also have a powerful personality and the materials used blend harmoniously.
