Ian Simpson Architects and dRMM named as architects for first phase of Battersea Power Station redevelopment in London

Developer Treasury Holdings has announced Manchester-based Ian Simpson Architects and London practice de Rijke Marsh Morgan (dRMM) as the architects for the initial phase of Rafael Viñoly’s masterplan for the 1930s building and surrounding area.

Phase one – referred to as RS1 – involves the development of two blocks to the west of the 1930 power station. Ian Simpson Architects will take the larger of these two blocks, with dRMM responsible for a smaller residential complex. Collectively, RS1 will cover 90,000 sq m of residential, office and studio space, restaurants and shops.

Managing Director of Treasury Holdings, Rob Tincknell commented: “It has always been important for us to create architectural diversity and an interesting aesthetic for this site; the largest redevelopment in Central London. We don’t want another run-of-the-mill residential scheme. We want it to be a real exemplar of work and place-making. We were very impressed with these guys”

The complete £5.5bn scheme was approved by Wandsworth Council and London Mayor Boris Johnson in November 2010, with Communities Secretary Eric Pickles giving the green light this week. RS1 is due for completion in the summer of 2012, with the entire 750,000 sq m scheme due for completion in 2026.
