Valéron® XL installed in Dubai’s newest subway

The population in Dubai city is expected to grow from 1 to 3 millions within the next 15 years. Dubai Municipality rapidly understood the necessity to improve its transport network capacity.

Back in 2003, the Municipality launched a study that resulted in the actual concept of a subway system. Dubai Municipality decided to start up initially with two lines: a Green and a Red Line for a total of 70 km.

The Dubai Metro will implement the most advanced technologies in their subway system, reflecting the modern character of its city. As such the metro will be operated completely automatically. This means that the vehicles will be equipped with all possible comfort as for instance air conditioning systems and computer controlled vehicles not requiring any drivers. Although the lines run mostly in open air (for about 57 km), the 47 metro stations have been developed according design architects.

The chemical composition of the soil as well as a high groundwater table, obliged the engineers to protect the concrete structures (piles, foundations) with a heavy duty bitumen membrane. They chose for Bitustick® XL, a bitumen membrane locally produced by Henkel Polybit, using a Valéron® XL protective top layer. These self adhesive bitumen membranes are easy and fast to apply, don’t require special equipment, are cold applied (no flame hazard) and provide self sealing laps.

Today 40,000 m² of Valéron® XL film has been installed in the Red Line. With the Green Line to go and two new lines already in plan (Purple and Yellow), Valéron Strength Films can expect to more than triple this amount over the next years.
